Coal tar-A topical treatment that is believed to inhibit the enzymes which contribute to psoriasis in some patients. Coal tar can cause increased sensitivity to sunlight, burning or stinging, and staining of the skin and clothing. LupiCare products do not contain coal tar.

Corticosteroid drug–A topical treatment used to treat itching, scaling and redness associated with psoriasis. Corticosteroids, sometimes referred to as "cortisone" or "steroids," should be used with caution. Stronger corticosteroid preparations are available only with a prescription. When corticosteroids are used for long periods of time, dangerous side effects are possible. These include adrenal gland suppression, weight gain, increased blood pressure, mental depression, osteoporosis, and more. Never stop taking any steroid-based drug suddenly, since this increases the likelihood of complications. LupiCare products do not contain corticosteroids or any cortisone derivatives.

Cortisone–See "corticosteroid." LupiCare products do not contain cortisone.

Dandruff–A skin condition that produces white flakes that may be shed and fall from the hair.

Epidermis–The top five layers of the skin where psoriasis forms.

Psoriasis–A chronic inflammatory condition of the skin. Symptoms include scaling, redness and itching. Many scientists believe psoriasis is triggered by an immune system or inflammatory response. Under normal circumstances, cells move from lower levels of the skin to the surface in about one month. In psoriasis, this process is tremendously accelerated–taking just a few days. This build-up of skin cells results in the characteristic symptoms of flaking and peeling associated with psoriasis.

Plaques–Silvery scales and flakes that are symptomatic of the most common type of psoriasis.

Salicylic Acid–Salicyclic acid assists in the healing of the skin in addition to relieving irritation and removing the scales associated with psoriasis. In LupiCare products, salicylic acid is contained in an emollient base that allows for effective absorption.

Scales–See "Plaques."

Seborrheic Dermatitis–A skin condition characterized by greasy or dry white scales, with or without associated reddened skin. Seborrheic dermatitis may have flakes like dandruff but usually is accompanied by inflammation that can weep or crust over. Seborrheic dermatitis can sometimes be helped by dandruff shampoos but often requires a medicated cream or lotion to make a real difference.

Side Effects–Unintended and sometimes undesirable consequences which occasionally occur when using a medication or other product. Many psoriasis treatments have been known to cause unpleasant or harmful side effects.

Steroids–See "corticosteroid." LupiCare products contain no cortisone or steroids.

Topical treatment–A therapeutic substance which is applied directly to the affected area of the skin. LupiCare products are topical treatments.
